Do muito que já foi publicado sobre o duplo papel de Paul Otlet, parece haver um entendimento majoritário quanto à prevalência do papel de realizador sobre o de visionário. Na medida em que o foco da análise costuma ser direcionado sobre sua capacidade de prever a importância e o impacto da Internet como um sucedâneo da biblioteca universal, a polêmica naturalmente acaba por desbordar os limites (em si mesmos, já tradicionalmente difusos) da ciência da informação. Com esse ponto de vista, o presente ensaio parte de Isabelle Rieusset-Lemarié e tenta buscar, em autores como Michel Foucault, Norberto Bobbio, Hannah Arendt e Pierre Bourdieu, entre outros, novas luzes que, adicionadas àquelas emanadas por artigos já clássicos em nossa área, possam contribuir para gerar novas e repensar tradicionais interpretações sobre os papéis desempenhados pelo grande cientista social belga.

<b>Abstract</b>
<p>
The major understanding extracted from published works in the domain of Information Science seems to converge in the sense that the entrepreneur role played by Paul Otlet prevails over the visionary one. Mainly focused on his ability to foresee the Internet as a succedaneum of the Universal Library, the discussion uses to cross the frequently fuzzy boundaries of Information Science. This essay started from an Isabelle Rieusset-Lemarié paper and tries to capture new lights in the Michel Foucault, Norberto Bobbio, Hannah Arendt and Pierre Bourdieu´s works that may aggregate some contributions to other classical papers in our field. Its presupposition, according to the author´s view of point, points out to the possibility of new readings about the double role played by the great Belgian social scientist.
