| Abstract: | At an Oct. 21 press conference in Brussels, Abel Matutes, the European Commission's chief of North-South relations, said the EEC (European Economic Community) has been requested to approve a 135 million ECU grant (US$150 million) for the Peruvian government. The grant, to be disbursed over a three- year period, will finance several economic and social welfare projects. The EEC aid is separate from financial commitments made by member-nations pertaining to Peru's "Support Group." Under the latter arrangement, Germany, Belgium, Spain, France, Holland, and Italy have offered a total US$247 million in donations and loans. According to Commission statistics, Lima received 164 million ECUs (US$196.8 million) in EEC aid between 1975 and 1990. (Basic data from AFP, 10/21/91) |
