| Abstract: | On July 20, the Nicaraguan Interior Ministry announced that trials would be arranged for the 40 persons arrested during an opposition rally July 10 in the town of Nandaime. Nearly all persons detained have been sentenced to six-month jail terms under a law that allows the police to issue such sentences without granting defendants the right to trial or counsel. The decision will allow those arrested to present their cases, apparently in public. But it may also raise the possibility that some could receive sentences longer than six months.
