| Abstract: | In mid-July, the Zapatista National Liberation Army (Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional, EZLN) endorsed the appointment of Jorge Madrazo Cuellar as the government's new Chiapas peace commissioner, creating an opening for the renewal of negotiations in the near future. Madrazo--former head of the government's National Human Rights Commission (Comision Nacional de Derechos Humanos, CNDH)--officially replaced Manuel Camacho Solis as peace commissioner on June 24 (see SourceMex, 07/13/94). The EZLN announced the decision to accept Madrazo as Chiapas peace commissioner in a letter to three Mexico City newspapers, published on July 16. According to EZLN spokesman Subcommander Marcos, the decision to accept the appointment of Madrazo was in part an effort by the Zapatistas to show a good-faith effort to reach a negotiated solution to the conflict in Chiapas.
